Handfasting Beneath the Oaks: An Ancient Tradition Rooted in Love
At The Oak Grove, handfasting feels less like a performance and more like a remembering.
Long before written contracts, legal documents, and formal wedding ceremonies, the joining of hands was one of the oldest ways two people could declare their intention to walk through life together. Across Celtic lands in Wales, Ireland, and Scotland, cords or ribbons were gently wrapped around the hands of a couple as a symbol of unity, trust, and a shared future.
The binding was never intended as a restraint, but as a connection: two separate paths choosing, willingly, to become entwined.
Beneath the ancient oaks of The Oak Grove, this ritual takes on an added layer of meaning.
For centuries, oak trees have stood as symbols of endurance, rootedness, and quiet strength. In both Welsh and Irish Druidic traditions, the oak was regarded as sacred, associated with wisdom, shelter, resilience, and the passing of time. Oaks grow slowly but deeply. They weather storms not through force alone, but through flexibility, balance, and roots that hold firm beneath the ground, unseen.
There is something profoundly fitting about promises being spoken beneath their branches.
As hands are bound together, the cords become a reflection of the grove itself: individual strands woven into something stronger together than apart. The act is both ancient and deeply personal—not simply a binding of hands, but an acknowledgement that love, like the oak, is shaped gradually through patience, care, resilience, and trust.
Many couples choose colours and materials that carry their own significance:
Green for growth and renewal
Gold for warmth, abundance, and joy
Blue for loyalty, honesty, and calm waters
Red for courage, passion, and deep affection
Some incorporate ribbons passed down through generations of their family. Others choose silk, linen, velvet, or natural fibres that reflect the landscape surrounding them. When the ceremony is complete, the cords remain as a treasured keepsake, a tangible reminder of a moment held beneath trees that were themselves given the time and space to grow.
At The Oak Grove, we welcome couples from many different spiritual paths and traditions. Some arrive with Wiccan celebrants, some follow Norse Pagan beliefs, some are inspired by Druidic practices, while others create ceremonies shaped entirely by their own personal story. Couples are warmly encouraged to bring the celebrant who feels right for them and to craft a handfasting that reflects who they truly are.
This grove is not about prescribing belief. It is about creating space for meaning.
As a Druid working amongst these trees and upon this land, I have come to see that the oaks are never simply a backdrop to the ceremony. They become part of it. Their presence shapes the atmosphere in ways both subtle and profound. Beneath their branches, ceremonies feel held—rooted within something older, quieter, and enduring.
The oaks of this grove were not chosen for the urgency of shipbuilding or industry. They were allowed to remain, to widen, and to endure. Today, they stand not as timber for journeys across the sea, but as witnesses to journeys of another kind.
Journeys rooted in love.
Journeys rooted in gathering.
Journeys rooted in the decision to stay.
And perhaps that is why handfasting feels so at home beneath these branches. Both the ritual and the trees remind us that the strongest bonds are not forged in haste, but nurtured over time—with intention, patience, and care.
Like the oak itself, love grows deepest when its roots are allowed to take hold.
