SUSTAINABLE POWER AT THE OAK GROVE
At The Oak Grove, sustainability has never been an afterthought. It has shaped how we care for the land and run the venue from the very beginning.
Long before “eco weddings” became a recognised idea, we were already thinking about how to host celebrations in a way that respected the woodland setting that makes The Oak Grove so special.
Our goal is simple: to create extraordinary weddings while protecting the natural environment that surrounds them.
Biodiveristy
The Oak Grove is not a formal garden. It is a woodland landscape that we allow to evolve naturally.
We avoid pesticides and chemical treatments, allowing wildlife to thrive. Paths are gently cut through the landscape rather than heavily landscaped, helping preserve the wild, fairy-tale feel that couples love.
Where we plant, we choose bee- and insect-friendly species, often including night-scented plants that attract bats. Fallen logs are deliberately left in place to create shelter for insects and small mammals during the winter months.
The result is a rich and thriving ecosystem where birds, pollinators and wildlife form part of the atmosphere of the venue itself.
Renewable Energy
Our first solar panels were installed in 2010, marking the start of our long-term commitment to renewable energy. Today, our system includes a 12kW solar array on the roof of our stables, generating clean electricity throughout the year.
To make the most of that sunshine, we’ve also installed a large energy storage system built from repurposed electric vehicle batteries (VW ID modules – 82 kWh). These batteries capture excess solar energy during the day and store it so it can power the venue later in the evening when celebrations are in full swing.
In the winter months, when solar generation is naturally lower, the system allows us to draw cleaner overnight wind energy from the grid, storing that power for use during the day.
Currently, around 80% of the energy we use comes from renewable sources, and we continue to expand both our solar generation and battery capacity to reduce our reliance on grid electricity even further.
Quite literally, many weddings here are powered by sunshine.
Water Stewardship
Behind the scenes, we are also planning to operate our own wastewater treatment plant. This system processes wastewater from the venue and converts it into clean water that can be used for irrigation across the site.
It will help us reduce mains water consumption while supporting the woodland planting that surrounds the venue.
Responsible Suppliers
Our sustainability approach also extends to the people we work with.
Wherever possible we choose suppliers who share our values, including:
locally sourced products
eco-friendly confetti
responsibly sourced bar stock
suppliers who actively consider their own environmental impact
These choices may seem small individually, but together they make a meaningful difference.
Looking Forward
Sustainability at The Oak Grove is a long-term commitment rather than a finished project.
We continue to expand our solar system, increase our battery storage capacity, save water and explore new ways to reduce our environmental footprint.
For couples who care about the environment, this means you can celebrate your wedding in a place where the beauty of nature is not only the setting — it is also protected and supported.
